The Refuge Cafe - another social enterprise done right!

Many tax-exempt organizations are beginning to capitalize on social enterprise businesses. Yesterday, I visited the Refuge Cafe in Phoenix. This quaint coffee and wine bar was a perfect spot to attend a workshop .       This great local coffee, beer and wine cafe is owned by  Catholic Charities of Phoenix and also makes a delicious hummus plate.  The earned income from this business will go back to the tax-exempt organization and fund their program and operating needs. Out of curiosity, what is your favorite social enterprise business?

My book, my dream

Today I attended a workshop and took next step towards self-publishing my book. We learned about how to design your book and this will take the final product into the printed version. This has been a dream of mine for a long time and today I learned so much more about what I need to do to continue this dream. Laura Orsini, Owner/Creative Director at Write / Market / Design , is a great source of information. She held this workshop for a bargain price ($75). This included a workbook, valued at $20, and a beverage at the Refuge Cafe (more on this great local place later). For this kind of information, you could spend between $500 and $2,000 to pay a book designer to do this for you. We learned the following in this 4-hour workshop. • Book sizes • Cover design • Parts of a book • Incorporating graphic elements • Fonts • Chapter headings • Headers/footers/page numbers • Lots more! NOTE: Laura also leads the Phoenix Publishing and Book Promotion Meetup .
